Participant Information

  1.  What is the research study about?

GLAAAM+ aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of HIV and Sexual health transmitted infection prevention (HIVSTI) needs among ethnic and cultural minority men who have sex with men in Australia.

  2. Do I have to take part in this research study?

Participation in this research is voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to. Your decision will not affect your relationship with UNSW Sydney or ACON. If you decide to take part, you will be asked to read the information carefully (ask questions if necessary) and to complete the online questionnaire.

  3. What does participation in this research require, and are there any risks involved?

The survey will ask you questions about HIV-related behaviours and practices, engagement with networks, communities and health services, as well as knowledge, beliefs and attitudes towards HIV prevention and treatment. We expect it will take you about 20-30 minutes to complete the survey.

If you decide to take part, you can:
    1. Go online (www.gayams.org.au) and read the Participant Information Statement carefully. You will be asked to complete a set of screening questions. If you meet all the selection criteria and decide to participate, click the “Yes, I agree” button and proceed to the survey. If you feel you do not meet all the selection criteria, please do not proceed any further as this survey is not specifically designed for you.
    2. (For venue-based survey only) If you prefer to self-complete it on a tablet computer, please ask our on-site recruiters to discuss this information sheet and the consent process with you.
    Professional support.

  4. What are the possible benefits to participation?

Participation in this study is voluntary. There is no direct personal benefit other than a chance to enter a prize draw. We hope to use information we get from this research study to improve HIV-related health promotion and service provision for Asian men who have sex with men in Australia.

All eligible participants who complete the survey will stand a chance to win one of ten $100 online gift vouchers. You can only complete the survey once. If you wish to enter the prize draw, you will be invited to provide an e-mail address at the end of the survey. All e-mail addresses are collected and stored separately, are not linked to your data and will only be used for the purpose of the prize draw. Your responses will remain anonymous.

The prize draw will be conducted once the survey reaches 500 valid completed questionnaires or on 31 November 2025, whichever comes first. Winners will be selected using randomly generated numbers and notified via e-mail within 14 days of the prize draw. Should the research team be unable to contact a winner or should a winner be unable to accept the prize before 15 December 2025, UNSW Sydney reserves the right to randomly select an alternate winner.

  5. What will happen to information about me?

The survey is anonymous. No identifiable personal information will be collected in the questionnaire so none will be stored as data. Once we have completed our data collection and analysis, we will store the data electronically on a secure UNSW research database for at least seven years. If you wish to enter the prize draw, you will be invited to provide an e-mail address at the end of the survey. All e-mail addresses are collected and stored separately, are not linked to your data and will only be used for the purpose of the prize draw.

  6. How and when will I find out what the results of the research study are?

After the study is finished, feedback will be provided at community forums and through a brief research report, which will be publicly accessible at various collaborating organisations’ websites (e.g., ACON www.acon.org.au, MHAHS www.mhahs.org.au, CSRH csrh.arts.unsw.edu.au).
You will be alerted via their media releases, social media channels and member newsletters. The research team will not contact you individually.
In addition, we will set up specific community feedback sessions and broadcast the dates and venues of these sessions in advance through public notices. These notices will be posted through community-based (both gay and ethnic) networks and media.

  7. What if I want to withdraw from the research study?

Submitting your completed questionnaire is an indication of your consent to participate in the study. You can withdraw your responses any time before submitting the questionnaire, without penalty and without providing an explanation. There is no way to withdraw after submitting the questionnaire as questionnaires cannot be traced to individual participants, since identifying information is not collected.

  8. What if I have a complaint or any concerns about the research study?

The person you may need to contact will depend on the nature of your query. If you want any further information concerning this project or if you have any problems which may be related to your involvement in the project,
